Student Involvement

College Level: Bryant University

Bryant University students participated in a semester-long service learning team project where the purpose was to develop a series of events or activities that help a selected non-profit organization run more efficiently and effectively. The students wanted to choose an organization that they could have a personal and local relationship with. Each looked to their hometown and familys for ideas. Laura Yepsen, from Saratoga, happened upon Seeds for Peace at a Peace Fair held by the church her family attends. Laura shared information on Seeds with her fellow classmates and so their project began.

The students worked closely with Sue on putting together a Newsletter and raising awareness about Seeds for Peace. The project also consisted of a poster board presentation competition in which they were chosen out of six groups in their class to compete against all other Management classes. At the final competition there was a poster board showcase and 20 minute presentation. Out of 20 groups, the Seeds students were placed 3rd based on overall effectiveness, the presentation and poster board. They also received a $75 donation to be given to Seeds for Peace.

From Laura: “Myself and 5 classmates were very lucky, and worked extremely well together, working with all of our individual strengths. Overall, the 6 of us felt it was an extremely valuable and memorable experience working with Sue Johnson and Seeds for Peace.”

The students from Bryant U. not only produced a great newsletter for Seeds, they also secured a donation of 50 seed packets from Tyler and Lori Kimball at Kimball Farms in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
